This show was just completely nuts from the beginning, so it JTS's all the time. Teacher fires a gun in class? Are you kidding me? He would be put in jail! Kids peep on that hot blonde teacher and she doesn't even care? Come on!
I did like watching the first year simply for the crazy stuff that happened. But then season 2 really got repetitive and I stopped watching.

God, if more of my high school classes were taught by the likes of Jeri Ryan I would have been deliberately failing them just so I could retake them again...and again, I may never have graduated on-time.
this show is so terrible i only watch it for amusement, like passions. if the show had focused on characters instead of something horrilbe happening every week [how can one school be so messed up???] it MIGHT have been better, but since david e kelly sucks, probably not.
Did they have to bring on Mini-Me? Was that the most bizarre plot twist ever? What were they thinking? He looks like a baby.
I really enjoyed watching this show when it originally aired on a Monday night. The first season was by far the most interesting. For example, The kid who ran the unautorized web site, the (18 year old) girl sudent who had the affair with the teacher and then who taught Shakespeare when the regular teacher wigged out, just generally the cast.
In starting going downhill fast in the 2nd season. It seems anyone who was at all likeable immediately was replaced.
The final jump the shark moment for me, though, was when they brought in the hispanics teacher who was supposed to be a Physics or Calculus teacher or something and all she did was give speeches concering social problems or her viewpoints on social issues.
That character did it for me. I was watching for entertainment value, not to have David Kelly's political views rammed down my throat. There is a time and place for that and Boston Public wasn't it for me. By the time it went to Friday, I had already moved on. So had lots of others.

the weakness to this show was its premise. something absolutely crazy happens every week at a large public school, whether some student has a gun or a teacher has a romantic, or semi-romantic relationship with a student. really the only shows that this format works with (something SHOCKING happens every week) are crime dramas. this show didn't have the patience to develop situations and build tension, instead rushing from one "crisis" to another and while it came in strong it went out with a whimper.
did this really COME OUT ON DVD because i found them for sale on the internet but not sure if they REAL. Anybody have any insight
I gotta agree with the posters who mentioned Principal Harper's daughter, who was very attractive but whined and complained about something every episode (geez, is this chick ever happy?), but that's not what caused the jump. What caused the show to jump was Fox moving it to Friday night, when most people weren't watching. After that it was straight downhill. Another great show that Fox ruined by either moving it to another night or changing the cast (see New York Undercover).
On a sidenote, one thing that was unrealistic about the show was how 99% of the female teachers were drop dead gorgeous (not that i'm complaining too much...they were nice eye candy)! I've never seen that in any school i've been to....usually it'll be 3% at best.

The show jumped when Goober (or what ever his f*cked up name was) tries to identify with everyone who has a problem, such as being a Jew, being gay (and he was dating the hook lady), and tries to buddy up to the principal. Then there was the sterotypical art teacher (first episode he puts the desks on the cieling). Also the constant production numbers got tiresome.
The show was good at the beginning, but lapsed into mediocraty in season 3.

Boston Public was very good in it’s first season and it’s last season it got good again, but Season One and Two book ended two pretty mediocre seasons (not unlike The OC). Although Harry Senate was an unrealistic character, Nicky Katt leaving suddenly like that alienated a lot of fans and the Hook Lady was preposterous - in my mind Boston Public had fairly bad writing and stories, but brilliant cast members. I’m absolutely baffled at the disproportionate vitriol directed at the excellent Jeri Ryan, Jessalyn Gilsig was good as well, Chi McBride was irreplaceable and even Michael Rapaport was bearable.
David E. Kelley sucks.
