Cagney and Lacey never jumped the shark. A great show with excellent actors.
Ci.
It means that people shouldn't make ignorant conjectures about a performer's personal life based on the roles they play on tv, is what that means. And it's nobody's business anyway.
To the poster who contended that Sharon Gless is gay: I don't think so--she lived with Jack Colvin (of The Incredible Hulk fame) for a number of years, including the time she was on C&L. And he sure as hell wasn't gay, so I guess that means...
It wasn't Isbecki. It was Newman, who had only been with the squad for a year. The episode showed how random violence can be (the perp said he didn't know Newman was a cop, he just wanted to see if he could get away with killing someone) and how people can become numbed by being aorund violence constantly.
Meg Foster's portrayal of the Cagney character was more in line with the tough-as-a-bull New York woman and was very reminiscent of Laverne DeFazio, whom I loved on L & S more than her roommate as well as Kate McArdle on Kate & Allie. Most men would be afraid to date women like the characters portrayed by Foster, Penny Marshall and Susan St. James, but that wouldn't threaten me at all. It's a shame Meg was sacked after only a handful of C & L episodes were made; the only other major role she got was as the villain Evil-Lyn in the Masters Of The Universe movie, which didn't do very well at the box office. Meg Foster was truly a great actress who was given the shaft even more prematurely than Joyce DeWitt and should have had a long career, but didn't. And that's a crying shame.
From what I recall of it, C&L was a great show for its time. I think that the most memorable one was when they killed of Victor Isbecki (spelling), and Cagney said, "So what? I didn't like him, what's the big deal?" or something. That really has stuck with me for a very long time, obviously as it was 23 years ago, but otherwise it was okay.
From JFox: ...When the main characters gained so much weight you doubted that they could pass an insurance physical let alone a police physical. The second when you noticed there only police officers in NYC that never arrested a black person. The thrid is when they put wacko goverment plots as a major part of there show. The only thing they left out was having a character based on Buzz Aldin, arrested for some act while drunk and they find out he drinks because of guilt of shoting the moon landing in hollywood.
Weird but true - there was an episode where one of the police women gets raped. In a cop show on another channel, a police woman also got raped. You got the feeling the network know-nothings thought they had to do something to avoid any feelings of inferiority on the part of the male viewers.

As if there is nothing inferior about a rapist!
Oh please! Men are not afraid of women. What we don't like is being put down upon. There's nothing wrong with showing "strong" women just as long as you don't push men down to show it. Fortunately, Cagney & Lacey did not do that.

There's room for two on the pedestal.
Loved it.Great cast, theme and writing.THe female "Starsky and Hutch"but much better!
too bad the dvd release did not include the tv-movie and 1st season limited series run. i got to watch the meg foster episodes and i thought she was really okay. she had piercing eyes but her cagney was no lesbo. sharon gless' version of the character was more aggressive and masculine imho. gless herself said in an interview that the switch was primarily because of a need for "more contrast" between the lead actresses/characters, and not because foster's portrayal leaned towards the lesbo type. but loretta "hot lips" switt (m*a*s*h) as cagney?!? that i gotta see!!!
Actually Sharon Gless was the 3rd Cagney. In the tv movie that served as the pilot for the show, Loretta Swit actually played Cagney.
Never jumped. It's coming out on DVD this month in the U.S. finally (May '07.)

Regarding some of the comments here, I am once again astounded at how terrified men are of women. If women would, en masse, just realize that and use it to their advantage...
As a long time woman in law enforcement, I can unequivocably say that Cagney and Lacey represented EXACTLY how women in law enforcement were treated, especially in the eighties. It remains my favorite show to this day and one that current women in the profession should watch.
