I finally got to see this series recently and I think it's one of the best shows ever made. There is a lot of realism in it. And the 'Ghost' episode and dreamlike sequences give it a uniqueness. Being a huge fan of Juliana Hatfield probably makes me biased, but I think she acted well.
I think it's Claire Danes best work as an actress; she is one of the greatest all time actresses.
I loved the show so much I bought a copy of the series.
I haven't been this blown away by a show since 'Freaks and Geeks'.
I wish I had seen My so called Life when it was originally screened, as I was a teenager at that time. Can't forget the 90's...:-x
The Ghost episode....Lame
This was a decent show, kinda cute and pretty true to form of what its like to be a teenager. The idea was to present a realistic portrayal so what do they do? Throw in a episode with ghostly Juliana Hatfield. Had they simply left you wondering it wouldn't have been too bad but when the mom looks at her and says "how did you die" it was all over
This show reminded me what it was like to be fifteen again. Angela was one of the few characters in the mid 1990's who demonstrated the complex struggle of being young and misguided by the boomer generation, while too fast hurrying to grow up among your peers.
The network made the mistake to cancel this and keep something like "Full House" and "Family Matters" for as long as they did.
The show was pure genius. It was too good for its time, what with the sheer connexion it made with...with.. reality. There has never, ever been a show like it, and there really never will be another one. I don't know why they pulled it off the air, too much acceptance of gay characters, I guess. It just reflects so much how teenagers (and I am one, so I can kind of say this) think, and act, and react, and live their lives. The show made a stab at teen drama and got right at the heart of things. It was beautiful, like someone else said, "a classic".
the adults were not very well written. the parents were writtenlike cardboard figures at times. only the kids saved the show. it had an 80s feel to it sometimes, not quite 90s. mixed results.
MSCL changed TV. There has yet since been a show as deep as that for the age it is focused toward. I have the DVD set and I treasure it, it will never get old. Timeless classic. Viewers were ripped off when it was taken off the air and the campaign "Save My So Called Life" was ignored by TV execs. When your audience is telling you what they like, why would you ignore it!!!!!!
I'll go with an unpopular opinion. They made an excellent pilot, really mindblowing stuff. And the 2nd episode after that very good stuff
After that there's such a big dropoff in quality.
The characters don't grow naturally and the magnificent tension they have in that first episode just evaporates.
The poster below me is right, the show was too in love with itself. I respect that attitude that it was much different thatn 90210 and other shows. But that's not enough. You can't define your program by what its' not. And if its different, don't make a spectacle of how "offbeat", "sincere" you are when your co-opting that commericial viability of the "alternative" trends of the 90's.
There's a lot of harping of how realistic the show was. Part of that is true; it did achieved small moments of real clarity and honesty. But after that they'd always take a U turn or throw in weird plot elements supernatureal shows, handcuffs). They never trusted the characters and it cost them dearly.
That being said it was an important step for better shows to come along. Most noteably Freaks and Geeks which blows this show out of the water using almost the exact same themes. However, Winny Holtzman and co. loved their own ideas too much and never had their stuff vetted through more talented 3rd parties who could have reigned in their spastic qualities and let the characters be themselves instead of puppeteering them.
This show was soooooooooo in love with itself. From the makers of thirtysomething, the show that brought the personal "problems" of rich, whiny, self-absorbed yuppies to network TV, comes My So-Called Life, the show that brought the "problems" of rich, whiny, self-absorbed teenagers to network TV. Yawn.
This show never had a chance to jump.It didn't run long enough. It's actually probably a good thing but I would have liked to see one more season out of it.The only problem is they were preparing to jump at the end. You could see them getting ready to make Brian and Angel intimate which would have been a jump larger than Fonzies.
Jumped when Angela Chase threw a huge tantrum over Rayanne and Jordan having sex after Angela had broken up with Jordan and told Rayanne a BILLION times she was over Jordan! Angela was not one who should lecture on 'best friends' after she ditched Sharon like the plague to hang out with Rayanne.
At least Brian got to know how it feels when Angela ditched him at that dance-the same way he ditched the girl he first asked, of course he never saw he treated that girl exactly the way Angela treated him, he just kept whining. What a hypocrite!
"Isn't it funny how every once in a while a real gem of a show comes on that makes you believe there is intelligence in the entertainment industry but then it gets ripped from the airwaves while complete crap like 90210 just goes on and on and on. Luke Perry is 50 for goodness sake"

Well hang on there- As a fan of both shows I think it's important to look at them in two completely different lights. They took place in completely different environments. MSCL was simply genius in every aspect. Everything about it rang true and the topics it touched on- especially the way it handled them- was very refreshing. But I think 90210 did a great job as well(in the earlier years at least) at depicting life in california.
