Suspension of disbelief wasn't a problem for a 10-year old like I was when this show was on.

Nobody thought of why an Anglo and a Latino could get along and work together. Nowadays, we've had so much of that racial bigot crap shoved down our throats by cultural Marxists that people stop being just people.

Back in the day, the shows portrayed folks just being friends and trying to do a job.
This is a perfectly fine show, taken on its own terms. To get maximum enjoyment from CHiPs, you must believe that:

*Being a motorcycle cop pays fabulously well...enough for a luxury lifestyle and fantastic threads.

*38-car pileups involving jackknifed semis and spectacular explosions occur several times a day on the Santa Ana.

*There is absolutely no racial tension between lower-middle-class Caucasians and Hispanics.

*Feathered hair is hot.

*Policemen never need to draw their firearms, much less actually use them.

*A patrolman always ends his day having a good laugh with his fellow cops, complete with back-slapping, before everyone suddenly freezes in place.

If you can accept all the aforementioned, you will heartily enjoy each and every episode of CHiPs!
Y'all are missing the point, The fact that this show sucked so much is why CHiPS is a complete TV classic! Where else can you see a 2-ton Mercury flip end-over-end while running over a dime going 12-miles-per-hour on the freeway! The Cheez factor is off the chart and that's why I STILL LOVE IT! And it only got better after Johhniie-Pie Baker left the cast!-Love, the fat bunned kid who was on Ponch's basketball team!
(Doom-Doom-Doom-Doom- da-da-da-dada-dada!) Ted McGinley is my Savior! WWTMD?
Ledog3 is 100% correct. Every show today has to be politically correct and carry a relevant message that is flattering to every race, blah, blah, blah. This show did not care about any of that, it was just a cop show. Period. I wish they still made shows like this today.

Ponch and John will ride again!!!!!
Jeeezuz people, take yourselves out of the 21st century and back to the 70's. The 70's was a time when most TV shows kept it all on the closet. Everything.
"Groundbreaking" to Latinos? Give me a break. People watching these shows back then could care less about that. It was about two cops on motorcycles who got into funny situations on LA freeways with idiot LA motorists. Nothing more.
Sorry for MY mispellings! My keyboard sticks.
Hi Lee,

Most of the problems yo listed are problems of the Illegal Latino invasion of America...gang violence, illteracy (your's judging by your spelling), teenage pregnancy, minimum wage jobs.

yes, Ponch has worked wonders to help your culture.
Chips was a great show. Who cares if it wasn't Shakespearean acting? Who cares if they didn't explore stimulating or controversial topics of the 1970's? Who cares if they couldn't act? Who even cares if they never used their guns? To many Latino-Americans it was ground breaking, simply for the mere fact that we were portrayed in a positive manner which was very rarely done in the 1970's. He wasn't Marlon Brando, Spenser Tracy or any prominent great actor. But to us, it made us visible. We were portrayed on prime time telivision. It was a small step towards the right direction. So if some of us loved the show and you didn't who cares. Find something else to complain about. For example, teenage pregnancy, climbing illiteracy rates, gang violence, war in the Middle East, minimum wage...........
This show would have been better if it had been more realistic.

I mean, think of it. How many times did the CHIPs NOT pull out their guns when standard police procedure would have required them to do so? And what about that crazy episode when the armed (I say again ARMED) policewoman is taken captive by a bunch of over-the-hill unarmed bikers? I won't even go near the one about the UFO.

Despite that, it was still a fun show.
Forgot to add the Vietnam vet 'Leonard' throwing dirt on cars in middle of highway.
