I think it jumped the shark with the second film.. I mean, all that planet Zeist stuff was just too farfetched for even such a farfetched story as the Highlander....

I did notice some deterioriation in Season 6, though a couple of my favorite episodes are from there.... I hated when they had the whole "Methos is Death" thing but that's my personal opinion. The second film was just too weird even for me...
My first reaction to Richies death was very similar to what most people have written. However, when i rewatched the series about ten years later it made a lot more sense and I actually like it now. As the time of the gathering came to a close, the honor codes that served immortals well when there were many more of them no longer made sense. Many of the conversations between Mcleud and Methos foreshadowed the free for all attitude many immortals would soon adopt towards those traditions. Mcleud was the only immortal to have killed another on holy ground early on in the series in the Templar episode afterall. In season five, I believe, before he killed an immortal who he had made a truce with centuries before they had the dialogue:"What happened to your precious Highland honor?" and Mcleud responded, "I changed my mind". Without the honor code being as useful or even necessary in the current environment, it only makes sense for him to kill Richie, since he has an advantage in skill and in his being trusted. Besides the kid was going to get whacked sooner or later anyway.
Oh, yeah... I have one definite jump the shark moment for Highlander. People talk about the death of Richie and season six but i've got a great jump the shark episode that came much earlier. Season 4 episode three, "The Innocent". The first two episodes of season four were two of the best in the entire series. Episode one of season 4 was directed by Adrian Paul. It has him going back to Glenn Finen. There he faces the viking immortal Kanwolf and fulfills and ancient prophecy that a Mcleod would come back from the dead and kill the viking Canwolf. He uses his fathers sword and avenges his fathers death. Pretty good episode. Next, in episode 2 you get to see how Joe Dawson lost his legs in Vietnam, was saved by his Sergeant who became an immortal in the same battle and then saved his life. Joe comes to four days later in a field hospital and no one seems to know the sergeant he's telling them saved his life by walking him 16 miles through the jungle. Then it gets even better with Charlie DeSalvo, Mcleods good friend returning from the Balkans to try an snipe Joe's immortal friend at the airport. I'll stop there but that's probably one of the very best episodes in the entire series. Charlie gets killed because Duncan does Joe a favor and let's his bad boy battle buddy live. Duncan then kills Joe's friend and realizes that he and Joe crossed a line by becoming to chummy. Powerful episode. Now follow that up with probably the worst episode in the whole series by far. Mikey the retarded immortal!!! Unbelievable!!! i mean i can understand Kenny being a child immortal because he died young but Mikey the retard?!?! Born to be kings? No man can be my equal? Basically the episode was a rip off of mice and men, so it wasn't even original. I think Richie or Mac took him into a Tunnel and had him put his ear on a train track as a train approached because he liked toy trains. Then the train took Mikeys head and Richie i think got the quickening. I'm really baffled as to why ANYONE thought that was a good idea and made it into an episode. Just about as awful an idea as could be conceived of. Really.
I remember back in i believe 2000 when the first X men movie came out, they showed a preview for Highlander Endgame. I was a big time highlander fan but i was really, really surprised how the audience exploded when they realized it was Highlander. I'm 32 yrs old and have been to alot of movies. i don't think i've ever seen the entire theater explode into cheers and applause from a preview of a movie like that. Then the movie came out and it sucked. The only thing that will save this series is good ideas. We saw what happened when Highlander 2 made no sense. It became one of the worst sci fi movies of all time. Highlander Endgame was full of unrealistic scenario's. Yes this is sci fi but you have to still sale your ideas to the public as believable and passable if your concept were to be true. The whole concept of Duncan having to kill Conner made no damn sense. They talked about how many each of them had beheaded like they needed to combine their kills or they wouldn't have a chance. That was never part of the series. So, when your trying to appeal to your fans, who of course follow the series as well as the movies, come up with ideas that work. Not some story line that won't fly with your fan base! When they're telling you geeze duncan you've only beheaded this many people that doesn't take into account how many each of those immortals had beheaded themselves! Just simple logic. Besides they had Duncan and Richie behead people on the series that were way older and more experienced then they were. The whole concept of that movie didn't hold water and it really irks me if you can't tell! The only reason i'm so ticked off is because Highlander has so much potential with it's historical flash backs from all over the globe. You get to see different customs from places and time periods that you can't get anywhere else. So much can happen in a short episode or movie that it makes for really rich story telling if they could just get some people with good ideas and a passion for highlander to come together and work on it. Sigh..... I just hope we haven't seen the last of Highlander. Bring it back please and bring it back right! Man... who doesn't love sword fighting and martial arts! Good looking babes from different times and places.... i could go on and on
Jumped with season six, like a lot of you say. But what is it with all you Methos lovers out there? One long post down there talks like the guy is for real. I could almost see his/her eyes well up as they write. C'mon, Highlander was fun but for sanity's sake don't be like Star Trek fans. As for Methos/Adam I thought it was a character with potential (having him be a Watcher was brilliant) but they blew it, big time. They always made Duncan come out the better of the two and they made Methos out to be TOO soft, which is weird because Peter Wingfield is a Martial Arts guy (I don't think it was his fault, BTW). They even paired him up with Joe as a sort of comic relief. There should have been a LOT more tension between him and Duncan, and Mac should have been uneasy about his chances against the guy. If they really do a Methos spinoff they should keep in mind that he's a 5000 y.o. KILLER. Complex, brilliant, philosophical, wise, world-weary and even forgiving? Absolutely! But without that subtle edge, that cold, ruthless hardness always subtly in the background the character has nothing, which is what happened in the show. But like I said the show overall was fun while it lasted.
This show was good and the music was even better
A new movie is coming out in September called Highlander: The Source
It could jump back if Highlander fans would ban together and rally Davis/Panzer to re-boot the series or give Methos one of his own.Come on I know your out there, write every-one.
it jumped when news went public that adrian paul was tired of having a regular job.
Oh come on! Like at least one of you has already said. Bad Highlander is better than no Highlander. I could have even stomached Highlander Raven. You all know you miss the hell out of it. I'm glad i have all 6 seasons on dvd. Hell I even have Duncan's katana. Hope no one tries to rob my house. If Richie was getting to old for the part they should have found a better way to kill him. They also didn't need to always have a beheading every episode. They could have had more narrow escapes by some of Duncan's cowardly opponents. Heck they could have even had small roving groups of badies who ganged up on Duncan and showed what happens if you break the rules. I don't think they ever really say what happens if you break those ancient rules they usually kept. I don't even know what to say about Kenny. My biggest complaint really though... they did use a couple of actors multiple times as different characters. On the old jump the shark someone pointed that out and when i watched my dvd's again he was right there's one dude that they use for like 3 different characters and another that's a bad im. sherif that Duncan relieves of his head and later on he's a news person! Man i think that's TACKY. What actor wouldn't want to say that they were in an episode of HIGHLANDER! You all know you love it! DO NOT KID YOURSELVES! Yes this show could have gone many routes but it didn't. I know we're all sorry about that. Maybe someone will realize how big the fan base for this thing is and do something about it. Untill then....
I have to disagree that the death of Richie was a JTS moment. It was shocking to say the least. To me it was a risk that opened up all kinds of possibilities for what to do with Duncan next. I had very high hopes for where the series would go next. I loved all the morality issues the show delved in, and killing your student (even if in an induced delusional state) would have been a great idea to deal with. Unfortunately we were cheated out of that by Season 6. I was always surprised the producers were able to sell half a season of episodes in which the main character only showed up half the time.
This show jumped from day 1. Highlander 1 was a complete story and there was no need for any spinoff shows or movies.
the show clearly jumped with the death of Richie Ryan after that it became unwatchable half time. Still a great show when u consider how great the good episodes are. My favorite is the samuri where duncan gets his katana.
The whole concept is stupid. Ignoring movie 2 because of the Sci-fi bs involved, we all know that either Duncan or Connar was gonna be the last one. After all, "In the end, there can be only one." Duncan and Connar had the skills needed to survive. Amanda was a crappy cat burglar, much less an Immortal. Also, even if she moved, there was no way she could be a Highlander WITHOUT A SCOTTISH ACCENT. Even the premise of Highlander: the Animated Series was a lot better.
I think it bounced, jumped, flew or got swallowed by the damn Shark when "Clauda Christian" showed up and Duncan wasn't in the episode at all. 7th Season STUNK TO HIGH HELL. If some one bought it for me. I would tell them to take it back and get something else for me. That's how much I hate the 7th season of Highlander.
