The show never jumped. The only 2 episodes I thought were absolute duds was the scotish episode where fred & ethyl were a 2 headed dragon and the episode of lucy as a statue. The rest are hillarious.
I'm fairly certain it jumped when Fred Mertz performed an A2M on Lucy after he caught her in one of her usual hijinks. The funny thing is, A2M hadn't even been popularized in the 50's-it was strictly a 90's fad.
I agree with many that the Conneticut episodes are not my personal favorites of the show, but I disagree the the move was jumping the shark. Young couples with children were doing just that in the late 50's. They were leaving their lives in the big city and moving to the suburbs to give their children a better life. It was kind of a phenomenon in the late 50's. So I consider the move reflecting what was happening in major cities across the country during that time. What I do consider jumping the shark was upping Little Ricky's age from 3 1/2 at the end of season 5 to 5 years of age just 4 months later at the beginning of season 6. Now Little Ricky is walking, talking and going to school. This change allowed the writers to show Lucy and Ricky being more parental in many episodes of the sixth season. Even though I thought Little Ricky was adorable, showing The Ricardo's being more parental took away from the shows humor. But I must admit that I do love the "School Play" episode where Lucy plays the wicked witch.....very funny. I'm 44 years old and have been watching "Lucy" for as long as I can remember. It will always be a classic!
2 issues:
Ricky had a nightclub in NYC and could never find any better performers than a washed up pair from vaudeville Fred and Ethel whenever he needed talent for a show. You would think there would be 1000 singers and dancers knocking down his door, but always went to Fred and Ethel.
When they went to Hollywood, Ricky acted like he met, knew and were friends with EVERY star there within a week. He went from a screen test of a film they decided to shelve to every stars best friend.

The show jumped the shark when Ricky Ricardo put on his 4 inch high elevator shoes. Why did he have to do that? So, he was shorter than Lucy. He seemed cuter and more self assured when he did not wear the elevator shoes during the first season.
"I Love Lucy" jumped the shark for 2 reasons. #1 Ricky spanking Lucy - horrible!. #2 That brat little Ricky, as played by Keith Thibodeaux, ruined the show whenever he appeared on the screen. His voice was like fingernails on a chalkboard.
I think I Love Lucy never jumped. Lucy was the best physical comedienne ever, and all her co-stars were very talented. The situations were mostly about human emotions that still play wonderfully today. I Love Lucy has only a few drawbacks: black and white film, Lucy's crying, and Ricky's spanking. I think the suburb shows has some moments like when Lucy raises chickens. About the Lucy Desi COmedy Hour, that show was not written as well but had its charming momemnts and some classic shows. I think that show jumped after eposide 9 "Lucy Wants a Career." The last four eposides were slow-moving shows with too little comedy. The Japan one is best of the last 4, but it does not have enough good scenes throughout it to make it a classic show. At the end, the strain on the marriage was evident, and the wirters were tired. I think the show should have ended after eposide 9.
I will probably never watch a show as much as this one, and suspect it's true of many others. As a young, bored and lonely kid in the 60's whose absentee (in spirit) parents would let him watch as much TV as he liked before dinner(homework after starting in 3rd or 4th grade), watched it about 6 nights a week, probably saw each episode about 10 times. I suspect there are others of my generation who did much the same and it's interesting this will never happen again with other generations. Why? There are so many more choices for kids these days, 100's of channels, dvds, video games, the Internet, kids have more toys these days, young kids have more after school activities options, and in general I think parents are a bit more attentive than in my youth.
The times and the technologies have I believe forever altered the watch the rerun over and over phenomena of my day. Greater choice is usually a great thing and certainly in this case. The show was good, historic, but mostly thanks for being there night after night and entertaining enough to help fill some of the voids in a kids life.

I loved this show as a kid, but I really do not enjoy it anymore. It's about as canned and formulaic as sitcoms get (I will concede that the writing was often of a good quality). I Love Lucy is little more than a window offering a depressing view of 1950s America.
As a huge I Love Lucy fan, I have to stand by the majority and say that the show jumped the shark when they moved to the country. It was already showing signs of aging and unfunny plot lines in the 5th season but when they moved out during the 6th season that did it. It was sad way to see the show end, and even more sad to see them drag it out in the show's sequel The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour. The show was definitely at it's best in the first 3 seasons, but got lost once they went "hollywood" and started doing trips, and eventually going country on us.
I'll never understand the people who say that Fred Mertz made the show. Really, if I wanna spend time with a fat, grumpy, unpleasant, unfunny, hands-shaking alcoholic, I'll just go visit my mom's side of the family.
I think I Love Lucy may just have JTS with the birth of Little Ricky (Desi Arnaz, Jr). It wasn't so bad when he was still a baby, but as he got older, the plot lines began revolving more and more around him and the show suffered as a result, IMHO. Bringing little kids on board a successful show is very often the kiss of death anyway, but when Little Ricky was featured playing the drums, he went from being a cute kid to annoying. At least he did with me. He was less annoying than Richie on The Dick van Dyke Show, but not by much.
And what was it with the Mertzes? Fred and Ethyl had to go EVERYWHERE the Ricardos went! I don't recall an episode where Lucy and Ricky went out somewhere that Fred and Ethyl didn't tag along. I understand they were an integral part of the cast, but still, you'd think they could do something without Lucy and Ricky. Even when they moved to Hollywood, here come the Mertzes!
Anyway, other than Little Ricky, I Love Lucy never jumped, IMO. A funny show.
Peace.
