When I first heard of this show I thought it was a live-action Simpsons (dysfunctional family, etc.). But after watching some episodes, I realized I made a foolish assumption. MitM is great, and nothing like the Simpsons at all. Except for the dysfunctional family part, but that doesn't count! I'm torn with Jaime's birth. On one hand, it allowed Dewey to have a bigger part, but on the other hand the dynamic with 3 boys and two parents is thrown out of whack. At least it maintains the "every child will be a boy" curse that's befallen poor Lois. Though the show may have changed, it was still good.
Came close to jumping with the last kid but knew when to quit. I always thought Reese was the coolest,
if a bit of a troublemaker. i think Justin Berfield is a great actor, hope to see him again.
Overall, I liked this show but Malcolm's puberty was problematic. He became disturbingly obsessive in his relationship with girls and his legs were disturbingly hairy. I like hairy legs on guys but something about his - not so much. Reese was always my favorite and he would be cool to hang out with. Never saw the point of having the fifth kid.
Malcom in the middle, I will get on DVD . It is one of those shows that you can watch over and over. I would not miss an episode and when I did an overwhelming sadness would come over me. I would roll on th floor laughing out loud in almost every episode. I really loved Malcom's Dad he was hilarious. In my view it never jumped NEVA!!!!!!!!!!!
Why is puberty a bad thing its less annoying I also love this show
I used to like this show when I was younger but after a while it got so old and repetive, Malcolm is supposibly the smartest kid in school and yet he can't stay out of trouble, Reese never grew out of being a bully, Dewey never seemed to get much older and often screamed too much, Lois became way too much of a bitch, and that woosh sound every time it shifted from scene to scene really annoyed me.
Reece floats on chair attached to ballons.
This show started off being great and ended just okay. Not that it jumped the shark, just everyone got older. I don't blame this on the show of course, it's natural. But all in all, this is a very memorable show. It just ended up like all the other sitcoms where the end of the series is not as funny as the beginning and middle. And the birth of Jamie isn't jumping the shark because at least he was a little baby, not like an annoying Cousin Oliver type. Also, it just fits the plot. They already have a lot of kids, why not add another? It worked pretty good, but since it was near the end of the series, it seemed like a desperation move. And maybe they added Jamie because all the other kids were growing up and they needed a younger character.
I don't think it jumped. They show matured as the characters aged. The later seasons only got more hilarious. It's the only show I can watch from season 1 to season 7 and say every episode it worth it.
I agree with Guest that Otto's Dude Ranch was the beginning of the end, although unlike a lot of shows, there were still good scripts from time to time after that.

The fundamental genius of the show was to reassure us that everyone else is just as crazy as we are behind closed doors. Francis was the darkest and craziest character in the show, so when he started to get sane the whole thing felt as though it was sliding towards Brady Bunch tedium.
show was great, never jumped
I'm new to this, so I'll assume votes for "Day One" roughly translates to "I've never once seen an episode of the show, but in an effort to look cool and non-conformist, I'll say DAY ONE! Yay ME!"

Pretty much nail it?
I believe it jumped the shark with Jamie, but the worst part of the show was the kid in the wheelchair. I think his name was stevie, such an annoying character.
For me it jumped when Otto's ranch was given too much focus mid-series. The only exception was when the boys visited the ranch and bought the giant firework to try and turn Francis. Other than that it was thoroughly painful to watch those segments. After that ranch phase was past the show could have jumped back, but the series was heading into the episodes where Malcolm wasn't breaking the 4th wall very much anymore. I still enjoyed the rest of the seasons, but it wasn't nearly as good as the first few.
I loved the waterpark one with bea arthur.... i think she won an emmy or some kind of award for it.
