This show just amazes me. Watched most of it out of order and random and I keep noticing the following:

1. Everywhere they beam down will invariably be Earthlike, Type M, with an atmosphere of 78.08% nitrogen, 20.95% oxygen, 0.93% argon, BUT when in orbit and on the ground, the planet will always be a random psychedelic color - usually neon green or red.

2. Maybe someone can tell me. In exactly how many episodes do they duplicate this shot:

Red Alert! (insert repeated zoom in-zoom out shot of blinking red light as scene fades)

3. Female federation uniforms. When creating the specification, someone apparently replaced the "minimum acceptable length" with "maximum" (not that I mind).

4. A drunk-on-juleps and spore-stoned McCoy does not a convincing Southerner make.

5. Wow. Shatner really has always been overly-paternalistic.

6. In the shot of the Enterprise in the Earth sky (complete with square edges from however it was pasted there) someone really dropped the ball on that edit.
It's one of my alltime favorite shows, but several of the Season Three episodes were just downright stupid. I watch the Abraham Lincoln episode only to laugh when "Help me, Spock!" is shouted out.

We could have done without "The Empath" and "Spock's Brain".

The two part Captain Pike episode isn't one of my favorites either, but it did give my friends and I quite a bit to make fun of.
I find it amusing the occasional commenters who berate this great show. C'mon! just admit it, you're closet trekkies and that's why you peruse sites like this! Keep it coming though. It provides a nice contrast to the gushing adoration. Concerning episodes, it's interesting the variety of likes and dislikes among you all. It just goes to show how subjective it all is. One of my favorite episodes that you don't hear many people talk about is What Are Little Girls Made Of? Love the eeriness factor. The cavernous underground setting. The revelation that they are all robots. And of course who can forget the awesome figure of Ted Cassidy as Ruk? This episode also featured one of my favorite Trek babes, the extraordinarily sexy Sherry Jackson as Andrea. She ranks right up there with Barbara Luna (Mirror,Mirror) and that lovely girl in Dagger Of The Mind, another great episode. Mantrap is also one of my favorites. They should have stuck with the original title The Unreal McCoy, however. Has more relevance. Scariest episode of the series by far with spooky music and a weird ambiance that was seldom seen in the series again. The second season boasted many classics, but one lesser regaled episode that I enjoy watching is Return To Tomorrow with Diana Muldaur. Wonderful music in that one and a wonderfully realized performance by Nimoy as the evil Henoch. Probably my favorite offering from the third season is The Enterprise Incident. The ruse factor is intriguing with Shatner chewing the scenery once again as Kirk slips into feigned madness. "The Captain is not sane" Spoke bluntly concludes, shortly before the deployment of the dreaded Vulcan Death Grip...classic! The scenes between Spock and the beautiful Romulan commander make the episode and are once again set against a hauntingly lovely score. My vote for worst episode of the series: The Alternative Factor. That's one I have a hard time sitting through. Oh well folks, it's been a pleasure. Not necessarily for you! Just love the show, that's all. Never jumped.
Third season. The three reasons above(Spock sings, Spock's brain is taken, and third season in general) happened then. More importantly, the almost Shakespearian moments of humanity disappeared. The first two seasons had enough humanity to give the pulpy show depth. The third didn't; even the main characters were less developed than before.
Spock....Pass....The...Butter!! Checkov...Are...You...Gonna...Eat...Those ...Donuts?!?!?!

Dammitt Jim, I'm a doctor, not Jennie Craig!!
space hippys was not worse show it was the one with Melven Beli in shower curtian as embodyment of evil. After that there was no going back.
The writing and acting were at times brilliant, especially some of Shatner's work.

Danno,

No offense intended, but "brilliant writing?" How about the time they had Kirk recite the Constitution? I guess if you're gonna rip someone off, you might as well start with the founding fathers....

And we all love the Shat, but there's a reason his "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" is considered a YouTube masterpiece (and it ain't cause he comes off as Olivier....)
the best thing about this show and twilight zone is that they are real, not tv shows
the best thing about this show and star trek is that they are real, not tv shows
The show was good. the Spock brain episode was pretty silly. but i never jumped the shark
Star Trek never, ever jumped the shark. The writing and acting were at times brilliant, especially some of Shatner's work.

Best episode was probably "City On The Edge of Forever" guest starring Joan Collins.

This show was way better than the trash on television today.
Found it! Look for "T O S Women", but be sure to place quotes round the expression, or you'll get an avalanche of unrelated material. The address is a weird combo of the words ' all your trek are belong to' , which I don't understand. Live long & prosper!
I also wanted to compliment (the other day) the show for its emphasis on career-minded, individualistic, self-supporting girl crew-members. They were sexy, yes!, in those mini-dress uniforms & tights ; however, they were, above all, independent individuals, making their own livings, making their own decisions. I have always thought that the classic, original Star Trek (1966 - 1969) did a much better job @ promoting the opening of frontiers for the girls than the later, dreary, p c , politically - correct, victim - victim type shows of later decades. I stumbled across an excellent web site at some point dedicated to this very point & engaging in a very thorough review re this subject ; I think it was called the Original Series Women or O S Women -- does some-one know what the address for it is? Thanks in advance. -- City Joe
Anyone else notice "To boldly go where no man has gone before" meant hanging out at a new Federation outpost every week?
I've always had mixed feelings. The 1st dozen or so episodes were pretty bad -- then they got themselves straightened out & things improved. The writing was hit-&-miss. I particularly hated the episodes involving the kidnapping of the crew by superior creatures ( Greek & Roman gods or philosophers or some sadistic race ) & all that mind-control tripe. They repeated that dull theme quite a few times. There were also some unbelievably ugly, alien, space, so-called-beauties with god-awful beehives & Marie-Antoinette shaggy hair-pillars piled on their heads ! They look so old! What in Earth were Roddenberry & the hair people & Hollywood thinking in that era? Some of them look like elderly poodles. It really ages them & dates the show, to boot. Fortunately, the girl crew-members were spared that nonsense (though there was that 1 girl in the very beginning stuck with that Marie-Antoinette ugly tower, but they wrote her out of the show very quickly -- I skip those episodes anyway). In fact, the very best episodes involved the appearances (alas, one-time showings) of individual, previously - unknown girl crew-members beaming down with the regulars. Above all else, the camaraderie (good language?) of the regular cast-members (Kirk, Spock, Doc, Scot, the Oriental gentleman, the Russian gentleman, the delightful Black lady at Communications) -- I've forgotten most of their names -- : they are such a delight that they can cover a myriad of writing stumbles & falls. I'm a fan, though not a die-hard 1. (I find the later Enterprises too p c, too politically - correct & unwatchable.) Apologies for my weak English & lengthy post. -- City Joe
