I loved this show and I was only four or five when I watched it (before 1985, thats when my parents split up.) Unlike everyone else, I did npt realize that it was Canadian unil a few years ago. Like a few others, I was too young to notice a difference in the cast members. I loved the locker jokes, the water, and the drunken dad. And the slime...which is a staple of Nickelodeon today. Go figure. Definitely needs to be on DVD, my seven year old would love it!
Even though I didn't have much perception of changes at the time, I remember noticing that "Moose" and the others weren't around anymore, and even though I stuck with it, it didn't feel the same. So I guess I'd have to agree that it jumped when the 84-85 team left, even though I stuck around. I'm just remembering having a hard crush on Christine, too, haha.
YCDTOTV was one of those shows that you ALWAYS watched, even if you didn't like it. Everyone knows it and remembers the major cast members (Moose, Dougie, Lisa, Alasdair). I think I even have some taped on VHS.

I actually didn't realise Nickelodeon aired it until recently. All this time I thought it was a show only Canadians knew of.

I would LOVE to buy these on DVD but I read that the royalties needed to payout all those involved would be really high. Someone should figure it out though. It's a legendary Canadian sketch comedy show that should live on.
I've seen some episodes rerun on Nickelodeon in the early '90s dated 1978-1979 (although I was born in 1980, I didn't have cable until 1991). I don't think they were full seasons, though. It seemed like two to four episodes.
Hey, all! Dan Lalande here - former staff writer for this series (1982-85.)It was my first writing job; I was all of 19 (I then moved on to "The Raccoons.") As a guy who was there, believe me: the 'Welcome to Sharksville' sign was erected when that early eighties cast left. Kids with less distinct personalities came in, and the gags became more and more generic. It remained a pleasure to write for Les Lye though, the token adult who stayed with the show throughout. Les is currently convalenscing in a retirement home here in Ottawa, Canada, and loves it whenever he hears from any YCDTOTV fans. The supervising producer of that series, by the way (i.e. the man I worked for) was Geoff Darby, currently head of Oprah Winfrey's production company. Anyway, glad you all liked the gags!
When people say this show jumped the shark "When the original cast left"... do they realize that this show started in 1978-1979? And that the original cast was never seen on Nickelodeon? Or are they talking about the 1984 and 1985 cast?

Anyway, I'd have to say this show jumped around 1987 and 1988. CHristine "Moose" McGlade and Lisa Ruddy left, as did Alasdair and Adam, and even Dougie and Vanessa left as well. The new cast couldn't match up to the old ones and seemed like a bunch of wannabes in comparison, even if the jokes were the same.
Even though it kinda blew when members of the original cast left, You Can't Do That On Television never jumped. I can't think of any kids show out there right now as irreverent or funny.
Never really jumped. Needs to be on DVD!
For me it did'nt jump. I was too young to realize the difference in the show after the original cast left. I mean the skits were all the same so to me it was like nothing had changed. If I had been older then I would have complained. I have all the episodes of this show on DVD. It's really cool. Man the 80's in my happy place.
This show was Nickelodeon at its finest!
I started watching this when I was around 7 or 8. Anyway, I have to say it was hard to watch it when Moose and Lisa took off. Knowing that Alistair was on it I knew I could handle it. Then he left and the show wasn't the same anymore. I continued to watch it until I was 14. It wasn't funny anymore. I think the only reason why I continued to watch because I enjoyed listening to their Canadian accents.
Never Jumped. I remember this from my youth. Les Nye was one of the better character actors I've ever seen. Who could forget all his characters?

The drunken, slovenly Dad
Barfy
The Executioner
and the nose-picking, farting show producer Ross.

D'ehhh I heard that!!!!

Great show. A real classic
This is a no brainer.
When Christine left (aka Moose) the show it was never the same afterwards.
Lisa leaving around the same time didn't help either.
Jumped from day one! The two things that are wrong for this show are: The 1920s style theme song and Alanis Morrisette. I won't explain about Alanis because we all know she sucks. The theme song was the main reason I tuned in so long ago. I was actually thinking about playing the clarinet with that style of antiquated music when I became a teen. Here I am at almost eighteen and know I am into different things. I like the humor and all, but the band that performed the theme should have stayed down by where Britney Spears grew up in Louisiana.
This show definitely jumped the shark when Christine "Moose" McGlade, followed by several others, left the show. She and that other young chick she seemed to always be in competition with, and that young fellow they always seemed to be chasing after to little effect, were the ones that carried the show. That, actually, is saying a lot. The skits, as well as the rest of the show, was fun, though sometimes predictable. But without Christine, et al., in the intervening bits, it all kind of fell apart.
