The show jumped when it became intent on pushing a Christian agenda. Not letting Gabrielle become a warrior without Xena's new found Christian values. Running away from their true sexual preferences.
Xena was great until sesaon 5. The perfect end was when Xena & Gabrielle were crucified and their spirits were shown going into the "heavens". It was a beautiful, powerful, moving conclusion. They had experienced Dahok, The Bitter Suite, Callisto, etc. But then in season 5 they were resurrected and I remember turning off the TV and NEVER watched again. And I read how Xena was cruelly disrespectfully ended and I was glad I had stopped watching.
Talk about beating a dead horse. That's how they treated Xena.
It became sadistic and depressing, not fun and exciting like in the early seasons.

the show jumped for me, when they started getting into stupid christian themes. ruined the show for me, stopped watching. and, the fact they never 'got together' pissed me off too. they just didnt have the balls to make the two characters lesbian outright.
I was obsessed with this show for about a year. I used to think it was the best show ever. Some of the episodes could have been better, but it was still awesome! I have season 1 and 3, the collector's edition, and the last episode on dvd. If anyone would like to buy these, then post a comment back and i'll give you my e-mail.
This show NEVER JUMPED THE SHARK. It's no wonder that fans are still obsessed and in love with it as much as they were when it was still on the air. It had everything - drama, action, comedy, and LOVE. Best show ever. If you are a fan and haven't seen every episode - you definitely should. And also watching it in order is a must! Great show with great writing and acting! Love it!
It was a great show when it was light and fun like Hercules, but it just started taking itself way too seriously.
I thought it was pretty stupid when Joxer became a regular character too.
This show jumped when they went off into all the angels and demons conflicts. The backstory suddenly brought in all that Persian/Manichean dualism. It was more interesting when characters could develop and change without 'changing sides.'
Bitter Suite (singing) had me laughing hysterically. They really took the camp factor up a level, which is saying something.
Somewhere around season 3 there was an episode where 4 superwomen have the one huge 4 way battle, there was little story or dialog. This should have been the ultimate last episode climax. Instead it went 3 more seasons, boring.
Ah, X:WP. I love loved this show for its seamless mix of campy humor and genuinely moving dramatic moments. While it shared the fantasy and historical "timeline" with Herc, its predecessor, Xena was much darker, and its characters really changed from beginning to end. LL and ROC carried the show, and kudos to Hudson Leick as crazy Callisto and Bruce Campbell, without whom the world would be a gloomier place.
Yet, somewhere around the end of the third season, the show turned a corner. I loved the drama of that season, Rift and all, but all that globetrotting and not-dying made it difficult to take any of it seriously anymore. I loved the simplicity of Xena, Gab, and Joxer helping other regular people fight bad guys as they fought their own inner demons. The fantasy of the gods was consistent with Greek mythology, but soon it ballooned out of control as our heroes tangled with/became deities from every religion.
What really did it, though, was what happened to Callisto, easily my favorite character of all. The genuinely shocking death at the end of season 3 was totally negated when she came back a season later as some kind of weird demon. Then she became an angel? Reincarnated as Xena's baby? What?
There were wonderful shows til the end, but the point to me was that our heroines (and their archnemesis) were *human*. Making them superhuman wasn't nearly as interesting.
