I grew up watching this show, thinking how cool I was because it had all the current hit bands on it. I really thought it was such a great show -- up until I got old enough to begin to appreciate the musical universe with a bit wider perspective.

As I began to discover music outside of the pop spectrum, I also began to find that AB was one of the most mainstream, and unadventurous music shows ever. Did it do a good job at presenting the music that fell within its focus? Yes -- the producers were great at presenting dull pop music in an entertaining manner. Then what was my problem with the show? The problem is the very fact that AB focused on the top of the chart hits of the day...it never tried to go beyond that formula and present something with a bit of an edge or even real attitude. Someone below commented on PiL appearing on the show -- that was the furthest extent of AB's 'pushing the envelope' and it is largely considered a low-point of the show.

AB could have used its popularity to sneak some culture into the lives of the kids that loved it. Not so much that they turned away, but enough so that they at least were exposed to something more than the week's dance hit.

AB was great until I caught on that there was so much more out there than the pop drivel that was featured every week. Unfortunately, too many kids never learned that lesson.
American Bandstand jumped the shark when it left ABC. I have a couple of old episodes on tape that I viewed recently, and after doing that I now have realized that Ryan Seacrest is a 100% rip-off of Dick Clark.
i love american bandstand in philly
the abs regulars are the only show
not on cable or video.

thanks
Hi!

I`m Austrian and desperatly looking for the show #2687 (Season 29) including FALCO/Ingram on the weekend of 6/14/1986. FALCO, the guy with the #1 smash "ROCK ME AMADEUS".

Who is still having this special show on DVD for me? I don`t have any other shows to trade, but I would like pay for it of course. Maybe there is still existing other TV-stuff about him. I`m looking for US-articles in (daily/weekly) newspapers too (March till July 1986). Feel free to contact me!

VIENNA CALLING and thanx for all serious posts...Harry
When a classic show like American Bandstand can showcase talent like Donna Summer, Greg Kihn Band and A Taste Of Honey when they were just starting their careers, this show never jumps. Too bad the same couldn't be said of Hee Haw when Garth Brooks made an appearance during that show's closing years. I wish shows like Bandstand and Star Search could be brought back instead of the dreck such as American Idol that's now polluting the airwaves.
What ever happend to Linda Blyth & Johnney Contrares? We use to be friends back in the day, 1975-77.

Please let me know...
It jumped when Public Image Ltd. performed. Just who greenlit that (it is basically the greatest televised music performance in history, but PiL do not belong on AB). The shear horror on Dick Clark's face when he discovered that "Poptones" is 7 1/2 minutes of noise is beyond description.
hey what was the changes of the AB theme music?...
hey does anybody have the intros, outros and segments from the 80's American Bandstand? i really miss that show a lot... if so, can you post some on youtube please?
Bandstant jumped in the fall of '87 when it left ABC.....
Bandstand, Jumped the shark, when some of the bandstand dance regulars began to leave the show because they aged out. I missed Lynda Blyth, Johnney Contrares, Debb-E- Chaffin, Louie Navoa, Peaches Johnson, Damito Jo Freeman, Joanne Orgel, Sabrina, Kim Schrier etc.
I am looking for a video that contains an AMERICAN BANDSTAND episode featuring music guest, Oingo Boingo. Do you have this clip on dvd? Please email me a response on johnnys49@verizon.net thanks!

What amazes me about American Bandstand is that it's still a legendary show even though it's been dead since 1989. When someone mentions Bandstand memories appear out of nowhere. more people remember Bandstand then Soul Train, Dance Party USA and all those rip-offs. I wonder if Dick had an idea in his head when he took over Bandstand in 1956 if the show would survive.Once it hooked up with ABC the legend was about to begin.
37 years kids danced to American Bandstand's beat. then in 1989 it all came to an end. The show lost the man who made it a legendary show. Dick Clark stepped down as host. His replacement was a comedian named David Hirsch. Dick is a TOUGH act to follow and Bandstand vanished from TV on October 7th 1989.
Does anyone remember when David Hirsch hosted Bandstand in it's final season in 1989 on the USA Network?
