This show never jumped and I thought it should've run longer on the air! This show was hysterically funny and original, and I was sad to see it go.
There were some new talented actors on this show--unfortunately not Ms. Cho. Of her acting, the less said the better. As to her stand-up and books, anger substitutes for insight. She wants to instruct the audience how to feel rather than how to think. She couldn't be further from the best commedians--Chris Rock, George Carlin, etc., who, even if you don't agree with, you think about the world a different way after seeing.
all american girl jumped when the alex p. keaton caricature (the doctor brother) had the lack of wit to sing "yankee doodle dandy" with all the charm and panache of a rookie drag queen. margaret cho was hot then, and hot now; as other posters have noted her real flair is standup, not focus-free sitcom. it was very refreshing to see a fuller figured funny girl on television. the grandmother absolutely stole the show, and on several episodes there was an epilogue right before (and during) the credits where margaret and "gramma" seemed to be doing a bit of improv- that was great stuff!. the most egregious flaw was the overacting bunch of priss wannabes who played her new roomates. note to tv execs- sitcoms are supposed to make people laugh; the aforementioned younger brother doctor singing episode featured some absolute CRAP with the soul-searching (ohhh, my parents expect too muchhhhhhhh......) HMMM...singing, melodrama, and getting rid of original family...sounds like a shark-jumping hat trick.
Well being Asian American. I wasn't sure if I was going to see anything I liked in this sitcom, when I tuned in. Oh it was so funny! It had the Crazy controlling Asian mom that seemed to be able to hear through trough the walls. The over achieving sibling in the brother. My family always seemed so crazy. I never saw anything like my family in the cosbys or family ties or those other sitcom families. If youve ever seen that MCho special she was like "All day Asian Americans spend there days in America on to go home to a foreign land, with weird smells and languages" Her comedy has helped me see the comedy of being of Asian descent who grew up in American. I only saw a few shows so at least to me AAG never jumped
Long before Ellen, there was another lesbian stand-up comedienne named Margaret Cho who caught someone's attention on the comedy circuit and was offered a series. Offering Cho a series was an inspired idea but the final product was a huge disappointment. ALL-AMERICAN GIRL was a show that really jumped from day one and it really had nothing to do with Ms. Cho. The creative people behind the scenes just seemed to be clueless as to whether they wanted this show to be a family-oriented comedy or if the wanted it to be a single-girl-trying-to-make-it ala Mary Richards kind of comedy. Their ambivalence towards specifying the kind of show they wanted it to be is what killed it so quickly. It had nothing to do with Ms. Cho, who is charming and funny, but the show didn't have a focus. I often wondered if the show might have been better if they had allowed Ms. Cho a little more creative control (the whole thing definitely seemed to be out of her hands), however, we've all seen what happens to sitcoms where the star gets creative control (Alan Alda in M*A*S*H the prime example). ALL-AMERICAN GIRL was a very sad thing because Ms. Cho is very talented but you couldn't tell from this show.
Margret Cho's stand up is great! She talks about it in her latest performance. ABC made her lose weight, change her image, etc. No wonder it didn't last long...it was sadly doomed before it started.
Before this show I thought Cho was a funny, sometimes edgy comedian. The show was pretty lame from day one, but I stuck with it, as a 'comic of color' (not Asian) myself. But after she went mainstream, she just didn't interest me anymore. Like so many before her, this is a TALENTED person who once they hit it 'big' thought they were more vital to the culture than they really were. Also, I HATED that this show wasted the magnificent B.D. Wong (now on--Law & Order, I think). Oh, and to the poster who said "fat chicks don't get ratings". Well, one of the great things about the USA is that even a cro-magnon like YOU has the right to express an opinion (however STUPID and INACCURATE it is). Ever heard of Oprah, Ricki, or Roseanne?
As much as I like Margaret Cho, it was getting to be run down. The Charlie's Angels jokes, the culture clash between the family, etc. Her stand up was more hilarious. If you want to see what Cho is really capable of, rent 'I'm The One That I Want' (Just be aware she tells a lot of gay jokes).
This show was pretty bad from the get-go, but it nonetheless had one very funny line that I'm still quoting all these years later: "How does my butt look when I'm dancing?" It was probably the only ep I ever caught, but I've never forgotten that line. It was the $#it.
Oh! You people are so mean! MCho is a funny, funny, woman. This show was great with the grandmother & the Parents who were trying to run her life. I didn't like the early yuppie brother/boyfriend, but that was his role. I wish she had been allowed to continue, but after reading her book, I can see that it was not to be...
The second someone decided to give the amazingly unfunny Cho a show. Who cares if you're Korean or Egyptian, you're just not funny. Then she comes out with the one woman show, hitting us over the head with the fact that she's fat (like we didn't notice), and those evil Hollywood types wanted her to be thin! How dare they! You break those shackles, girl, and be free to be a fat slob! And be a lesbian while you're at it! Almost makes Geri Jewell seem funny (I didn't think that was even possible). Who tells someone they should go into comedy when they're so obviously inept at it? Poor career choice, Maggie.
The best part about this show was Margaret Cho's perv grandmother. She was always reading the titles of the pornos in their store. She was so cool!
